First Trimester (Weeks 5-13)

Massage

Gentle, nurturing touch supports hormonal changes. Focus on head, neck, and shoulders to alleviate fatigue, tension, and early discomfort. Light lymphatic drainage can help reduce bloating.

Special Approach

Use lavender or peppermint essential oils to calm nausea and promote relaxation. Avoid abdominal work during early weeks.

Baby's Development

The baby’s heart begins to beat, and brain and spinal cord are forming. By Week 12, major organs are developing, and the baby is growing rapidly.

Maternal Experience

Mothers often feel fatigued, nauseous, and overwhelmed. Emotional fluctuations are common. Breast tenderness, morning sickness, and heightened fatigue may peak during this time.

Second Trimester (Weeks 14-26)

Massage

Full-body side-lying & face-up massage with special attention to the mid-back, hips, and legs. Incorporate warm compresses or magnesium-infused lotion for relaxation and to reduce cramping or swelling.

Special Approach

Focus on relieving tension from round ligament pain and postural changes. Adjust techniques to avoid supine hypotensive syndrome.

Baby's Development

The baby’s muscles develop, and coordinated movements begin. Facial features form, and by Week 23, the baby is ~11" and 1.5 lbs.

Maternal Experience

Many mothers feel the baby’s first movements (“quickening”). Shortness of breath, mild swelling, and leg cramps may appear. Energy levels often increase compared to the first trimester.

Third Trimester (Weeks 27-40)

Massage

Focus on lower back, pelvis, and hips to reduce stress from the baby’s weight. Gentle myofascial release and lymphatic drainage can reduce swelling and ease nerve compression. Labor prep techniques may be incorporated upon request.

Special Approach

Use side-lying positions with warm compresses for comfort. Clary sage or grounding essential oils can prepare the body for labor (used only late in pregnancy).

Baby's Development

The baby grows to ~20" and 6-9 lbs. They turn head-down in preparation for birth. Brain and lungs mature, and fat is gained for warmth after delivery.

Maternal Experience

Mothers may experience Braxton Hicks contractions, increased fatigue, pelvic pressure, and disrupted sleep. Anticipation for labor is high as the body prepares for delivery.
